10 Questions to Ask Your School
- Are all teachers, administrators, and staff aware that gun violence is the #1 killer of children and adolescents (Source: CDC)
- What are students taught about guns and gun safety? (Refer to Chapter 1 Section I of the Protocol for Prevention)
- Are all teachers, administrators, and staff trained to recognize when a student or coworker may be struggling or in crisis? (Refer to Chapter 2 of the Protocol for Prevention)
- Is there a social-emotional learning curriculum that focuses on resilience? (Refer to Chapter 1 Section IIIA of the Protocol for Prevention)
- Are there both suicide assessment and threat assessment protocols that are evidence-based and validated? (Refer to Chapter 3 of the Protocol for Prevention)
- Are all teachers, administrators, and staff trained in those protocols? (Refer to Chapter 3 of the Protocol for Prevention)
- How often are trainings conducted, and are new staff and substitutes trained before they begin interacting with students? (Refer to Chapter 3 of the Protocol for Prevention)
- Is there a dedicated, multi-disciplinary threat assessment team that includes at least an administrator, counselor, teacher and SRO or LE liaison? (Refer to Chapter 3 of the Protocol for Prevention)
- Is the school an OK2SAY partner? (Refer to Chapter 2 Section III of the Protocol for Prevention)
- Does the school have a website where parents can find the answers above, and get updates when policies or protocols are changed? (Refer to Chapter 3 Appendix; Chapter 6 Appendix of the Protocol for Prevention)
5 Questions to Ask Your Employer
- Is there a program to prevent violence in the workplace? (Refer to Chapter 1 Section 3B of the Protocol for Prevention)
- Are the leaders/managers/supervisors trained to recognize when an employee may be struggling or in crisis? (Refer to Chapter 2 of the Protocol for Prevention)
- If a supervisor or coworker reports someone who may be struggling, is there a threat assessment policy to determine whether that person is at risk of harming themselves or others? (Refer to Chapter 3 of the Protocol for Prevention)
- Is there an employee assistance program that includes 24-hour crisis support?(Refer to Chapter 1 Section III B; Chapter 2 Section IV A of the Protocol for Prevention)
- Is there a physical safety plan, and is it updated at least annually? (Refer to Chapter 6 Section II of the Protocol for Prevention)
5 Questions to Ask Your Community Organization
- Have you done a safety assessment of your facility/venue/gathering place? (Refer to Chapter 6 Section II of the Protocol for Prevention)
- Is there a violence prevention protocol or plan? (Refer to Chapter 1 Section II; Chapter 1 Section III B of the Protocol for Prevention)
- Are leaders trained to recognize when a member/attendee may be struggling or in crisis? (Refer to Chapter 2 of the Protocol for Prevention)
- If someone is struggling, is there a threat assessment policy to determine whether that person is at risk of harming themselves or others? (Refer to Chapter 3 of the Protocol for Prevention)
- Is therea plan for how to handle an emergency situation, are leaders familiar with and trained on that plan, and has that plan been reviewed by law enforcement? (Refer to Chapter 6 of the Protocol for Prevention)
